Delhi CM Rekha Gupta inaugurates 18 Namo Oxygen Parks on World Environment Day

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on World Environment Day inaugurated 18 “Namo Oxygen Parks” across the national capital, marking a major step in the government’s efforts to strengthen urban green infrastructure and improve air quality in the city.
The initiative is aimed at expanding Delhi’s green cover and creating dedicated ecological zones that can function as oxygen-rich spaces within densely populated urban areas. These parks have been developed with large-scale plantation of native and oxygen-generating plant species, with a focus on improving biodiversity and offering residents cleaner, greener public spaces.
Officials said the oxygen parks are part of a broader environmental strategy that includes afforestation drives, redevelopment of degraded green areas, and development of sustainable public landscapes. The project is intended to address long-standing concerns over pollution, rising temperatures, and shrinking green spaces in the capital.

Speaking at the inauguration, CM Rekha Gupta said that Delhi’s environmental challenges require consistent long-term planning and active public participation. She emphasised that such initiatives are not symbolic but are designed to create measurable improvements in air quality and urban ecology over time.
The government also highlighted that these parks will serve both environmental and community purposes by providing recreational spaces, promoting wellness activities, and encouraging citizens to engage more closely with nature. Authorities added that similar green projects are being planned across multiple locations in the city in phases.
Environmental experts have welcomed the move, noting that increased urban greenery can help reduce pollution levels, regulate local temperatures, and support ecological balance. However, they also stressed that the success of such projects will depend on regular maintenance and broader pollution control measures across the city.
