Assam Cabinet Expansion: 12 MLAs take oath as Ministers in Himanta Biswa Sarma Government

In a major political development, 12 MLAs took oath as ministers in the Assam cabinet expansion under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday. The expansion marks a significant restructuring of the state’s Council of Ministers, aimed at strengthening governance and improving administrative efficiency across departments.
The swearing-in ceremony was held in the presence of senior government officials, party leaders, and dignitaries. With this expansion, the Assam cabinet sees the induction of multiple new faces, reflecting the government’s effort to balance experience with fresh leadership.
The move comes shortly after the formation of the new government following the 2026 Assam Assembly elections, where the ruling alliance secured a strong mandate. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has been gradually expanding his cabinet to ensure broader representation of regions, communities, and party leadership within the state administration.
According to officials, the newly inducted ministers are expected to be assigned key portfolios in the coming days. The expansion is also seen as a strategic step to strengthen the BJP-led government’s organisational structure ahead of future administrative challenges and policy priorities.
The cabinet reshuffle is part of the ongoing process of building a full-strength ministry in Assam, which allows a maximum of 19 ministers including the Chief Minister.
