Delhi CJP Rally Violence: Police FIR invokes attempt to murder, 12 other charges
An FIR registered over the July 20 violence during the Cockroach Janta Party’s (CJP) "Sansad Chalo" rally near Kartavya Path invokes 13 charges, including attempt to murder, Delhi Police sources said.
The FIR, registered at the Kartavya Path police station on the complaint of an inspector, alleges that protesters tried to breach barricades put up to prevent them from entering the high-security zone around Parliament.
According to the police account, protesters allegedly hurled stones, slippers and other objects at security personnel and assaulted several officers after being stopped on Rafi Marg during their march towards Parliament.
The FIR also alleges damage to government property, including police vehicles. Official figures said more than 200 police personnel and over 60 protesters were injured in the clashes.
The case invokes 13 provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Section 109(1) for attempt to murder, as well as charges related to rioting, unlawful assembly, assault on public servants, obstructing government officials from performing their duties and damage to public property.
Police are examining CCTV footage, mobile phone videos and other digital evidence to identify those involved in the violence. The investigation is underway.
The CJP-led agitation began at Jantar Mantar on June 20, with protesters demanding accountability over alleged irregularities in competitive examinations and reforms in the education system.
