CWC meets to strategise parliament special session

The Congress party will meet on Friday to formulate its strategy on the amendments to the women’s reservation law, proposed seat delimitation and the West Asia conflict ahead of the special Session fo the Parliament from April 16-18. The Union Government plans to introduce bills implementing the Women’s Reservation Act before the 2029 polls, raising the number of Lok Sabha seats to 816 with 273 seats reserved for women.
Sources said the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting will be held in the national Capital, where top leaders, including former party chiefs Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, will deliberate on recent political moves and issues facing the country. Subsequently, the party will request all other like-minded parties as well as members of the INDIA bloc to meet next week.
The Union Cabinet on Wednesday cleared the draft bills, which seek to implement the Women’s Reservation Act before the 2029 parliamentary polls and increase the number of Lok Sabha seats.
The Congress has accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of using the quota law as a poll issue.
Last week, the Congress alleged that the Government called a special session of Parliament to pass these bills to “grab political mileage” in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu polls, The party claimed, it is a “gross violation” of the Model Code of Conduct.
The Congress also cautioned against any haste in amending the Constitution regarding delimitation, saying it is a sensitive matter, and the Government must tread carefully, as the exercise might put several states like Tamil Nadu and Kerala at a significant disadvantage.
The Congress has been severely critical of the Government’s handling of the West Asia crisis and took a swipe at the Government on Wednesday, saying that the role played by Pakistan in bringing about the ceasefire is a “severe setback” to the PM’s “highly personalised diplomacy”. The Opposition party also asked why the PM was not in the picture at all during the ceasefire negotiations.
