CPI(M) condemns US sanctions, urges Govt action
The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has strongly condemned the newly enacted US Sanctions Act, characterizing it as an aggressive weaponization of international trade that directly threatens India’s economic stability and foreign policy sovereignty. In a official press statement, the party urged the Union Government to reject the legislation and defend the nation’s dignity against foreign dictation.
The CPI(M) highlighted that the new legislation equips the US President with sweeping authority to impose tariffs of up to 100 per cent on nations purchasing crude oil and natural gas from Russia. Terming the law a blatant violation of national sovereignty, the Polit Bureau asserted that Washington is attempting to arrogate to itself the right to dictate global energy transactions.
Expressing deep concern over the domestic economic impact, the left party warned that India remains heavily reliant on imported crude and stands directly exposed to these punitive measures. Russia accounted for more than 51 per cent of India’s crude oil imports in July 2026. The CPI(M) noted that forced disruptions or costly supply chain realignments would inevitably escalate domestic fuel prices, triggering widespread inflation and severely harming the livelihoods of ordinary citizens. It further pointed out that energy imports from Iran have already been interrupted due to external geopolitical pressure.
