CJI Surya Kant calls some unemployed youth ‘Cockroaches’, slams attacks on system

Chief Justice of India Surya Kant has sparked controversy after reportedly referring to some unemployed youth as “cockroaches” while criticising what he described as attacks on the judicial system.
The remarks were made during a hearing before a bench comprising CJI Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi, which was dealing with a petition related to the grant of senior advocate designation.
During the proceedings, the bench reportedly questioned the conduct of a lawyer pursuing the designation and criticised attempts seen as undermining institutional credibility. It was in this context that the CJI made the remarks about unemployed youth allegedly turning into activists and targeting the system.
Following the observations from the court, the petitioner’s counsel withdrew the plea after offering an apology. The bench also raised concerns over the authenticity of certain claims related to the petitioner’s academic credentials.
The comments have since drawn attention, with discussions emerging over judicial language and courtroom observations during sensitive hearings.
