Bihar secures Rs 13,000 crore investment for pump storage mega projects

Bihar took a giant leap towards energy security on Tuesday with the signing of two Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) for the construction of 2,120 MW of pump storage power houses in Nawada district. The projects, which entail a combined investment of `13,000 crore, were formalised between the Bihar State Power Generation Company Limited (BSPGCL) and two private agencies. The agreements were signed in the presence of an array of dignitaries, including the Chief Minister Nitish Kumar; Deputy Chief Ministers, Samrat Choudhary and Vijay Kumar Sinha; Energy Minister Bijendra Prasad Yadav and Water Resources Minister Vijay Kumar Chaudhary.
Senior officials present were Chief Secretary Pratyaya Amrit, Chairman of the Electricity Regulatory Commission Aamir Subhani, Secretary to the Government of Bihar Kumar Ravi, Secretary of the Energy Department and Chairman-cum-Managing Director of Bihar State Power Holding Company Limited Manoj Kumar Singh, Secretary to the Chief Minister Chandrashekhar Singh, MD of SBPDCL Mahendra Kumar and MD of NBPDCL Rahul Kumar.
The two projects, proposed by GreenCo Energies Pvt Ltd and Sun Petrochemicals Pvt Ltd, are to be established in the hilly areas of Nawada, utilising the natural height differences at Ekamba (1,200 MW) and Gosaitari (920 MW). The total capacity is 2,120 MW. GreenCo will invest `7,800 crore, while Sun Petrochemicals will invest `5,200 crore.Chief Minister Nitish Kumar emphasised that the projects would bolster the State’s energy security and self-reliance, noting that they reflect "Bihar’s major step in the energy sector.”
Energy Minister Bijendra Prasad Yadav highlighted the Energy Department’s commitment to providing “uninterrupted and clean electricity,” adding that the initiative advances India’s Net Zero emission target of 2070. The initiative is a direct result of the State Government’s new Pump Storage Policy-2025, with work starting just five months after its notification. The construction phase is anticipated to generate approximately 8,000 new employment opportunities, with the entire scheme slated for completion within six years. This is the first major MoU signed after the formation of the new Government.
