DMK unveils major revamp, expands districts to 110
DMK chief M K Stalin on Friday announced a major restructuring of the party’s organisational framework, increasing the number of party districts from 77 to 110. The announcement came as Stalin marked the beginning of his ninth year as DMK president.
The restructuring comes ahead of the party’s organisational elections and follows discussions on an overhaul of the party structure at the DMK executive committee meeting held at its headquarters, Anna Arivalayam, on August 22.
The opposition party has been working on organisational changes, including bringing in younger leaders and introducing age limits and term restrictions for key posts, following its electoral setback in the April 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly polls.
Under the new district-delineation plan recommended by the party’s reorganisation committee, Assembly constituency boundaries have been regrouped to form 110 organisational districts. The Sholinganallur Assembly constituency, citing its high population density, has been made a separate DMK organisational district.
Stalin said the party’s core pillars — ideology, organisation, activities and affiliated wings — need periodic restructuring to remain responsive to changing political circumstances.
As part of the process, existing district secretaries have been directed to convene executive committee meetings within 15 days in the presence of observers appointed by the party headquarters. They will recommend changes to party structures at the city, union, area, town, circle and branch levels based on the revised district boundaries.
Reflecting on his tenure, Stalin recalled taking over as DMK president in 2018. He said organisations that fail to adapt to changing times cannot survive and described the latest restructuring as a step aimed at strengthening the party.
He expressed confidence that the DMK cadre’s collective support would help the party secure further electoral victories.
