Two killed, 2 injured as SUV catches fire after hitting electric pole in Assam's Nagaon
Two persons were killed and two others injured when an SUV caught fire after hitting an electric pole on a divider on National Highway 127 in Assam's Nagaon district early Thursday, an official said.
The SUV, bearing an Arunachal Pradesh registration number, was travelling from Koliabor towards Guwahati when the accident occurred, he said.
According to the official, the accident took place around 5.20 am when the vehicle hit the divider and an electric pole near a curve.
"Under the impact of the collision, the car rolled over to the other lane of the national highway and almost immediately burst into flames," the official said.
Two occupants were killed on the spot, while two others suffered injuries and were taken to Nagaon Medical College and Hospital for treatment.
The identities of the deceased were yet to be ascertained. The two injured persons are from Bihar, the official said.
"Over-speeding by the car is suspected to be the cause. The accident spot is near a curve also, but there are rumble strips on both sides of the curve. The cause of the accident will be ascertained after investigation," he added.
