2-year-old dies after falling into rainwater-filled sewage pit in Pune

A two-year-old boy lost his life after falling into a rainwater-filled sewage pit near his home in Pune's Loni Kalbhor area, highlighting serious concerns over public safety during the monsoon season.
The child, identified as Soham Lakhan Kasbe, was playing outside his house when he accidentally fell into one of several uncovered pits dug for sewage and stormwater drainage work.
According to police, four open pits had been left unattended without barricades or warning signs, making the area dangerous for residents.
Following the incident, the Loni Kalbhor Police registered an FIR against an unidentified contractor for allegedly failing to implement basic safety measures at the construction site. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine responsibility for the tragedy.
The heartbreaking incident has sparked outrage among local residents, who have demanded stricter monitoring of civic projects and better safety standards. The tragedy comes amid heavy monsoon rains, when open drains, pits, and construction sites become especially hazardous. Citizens have urged civic authorities to ensure proper barricading and timely inspections to prevent similar accidents in the future.
