Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL) has taken a significant step toward environmental conservation and sustainable development by adopting the Confederation of Indian Industry’s (CII) GreenCo rating system. This initiative underscores its commitment to achieving environmental sustainability and net-zero emissions.
The GreenCo rating system evaluates an organization’s green initiatives comprehensively. It focuses on parameters such as energy management, water management, material resource management, carbon accounting, green supply chains, and innovation. The system provides organizations with a roadmap for continual improvement in environmental performance.
To effectively implement the GreenCo framework, Bokaro Steel Plant has launched a dedicated training program and formed cross-functional teams. This initiative aims to enhance expertise in applying the system and strengthening environmental responsibility. Notably, BSL is the first unit of SAIL to embrace this initiative.
GreenCo ratings have already played a pivotal role in improving the environmental performance of over 1,100 public and private sector entities. Recognized by the Government of India under its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and included in global best practices by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the GreenCo system sets a high benchmark for sustainability.
This move not only symbolizes BSL’s commitment to environmental responsibility but also offers opportunities to reduce operational costs, improve efficiency, and enhance its green image. Additionally, it promotes resource conservation, circular economy practices, and a culture of continuous improvement.
