27 acres of illegal opium cultivation destroyed in West Singhbhum

Tuesday, 25 February 2025 | PNS | Jamshedpur

In a major crackdown on illegal opium cultivation, the West Singhbhum Police launched an extensive campaign, resulting in the destruction of 27 acres of illicit poppy fields. The anti-narcotics drive was carried out in multiple villages under the Bandgaon and Tebo police station areas, aiming to curb the growing menace of illegal opium farming in the region.

Under the leadership of Ashutosh Shekhar, Superintendent of Police, West Singhbhum, the campaign targeted major cultivation sites, starting with village Gayadih, Diggi, and Gagri under Bandgaon police station. Approximately 20 acres of opium fields were destroyed in this area alone. In a strategic move to foster community awareness, young hockey players from village Diggi and local spectators were educated about the harmful effects of illegal opium cultivation. Information was disseminated in both Hindi and Mundari languages, ensuring better reach and understanding among the local population.

Police officers informed villagers about the legal consequences of engaging in illicit poppy farming and highlighted the negative impact of narcotics on society. In addition, posters and banners containing detailed information about the dangers of opium cultivation and the benefits of alternative farming were distributed. The police also encouraged villagers to adopt alternative crops as a sustainable source of livelihood.

The awareness campaign appears to be yielding positive results. Influenced by the continuous efforts of the police, villagers from Bingburu under Tebo police station voluntarily destroyed 7 acres of illegal opium crops. This proactive action by the community is seen as a significant step towards eliminating the narcotics threat in the region.

With the destruction of 27 acres of illegal opium cultivation in a single day, the district administration and police department have intensified their efforts to combat drug trafficking and substance abuse. The operation also involved close coordination between the local police units and community leaders to ensure effective communication and cooperation.

Speaking about the campaign, the Superintendent of Police, West Singhbhum, emphasized the importance of community participation in the fight against narcotics. He stated, “Our mission is not only to destroy illegal crops but also to educate the community about the devastating impact of drugs. We are committed to creating a drug-free society with the active involvement of local residents.”

The police department is planning to intensify surveillance and continue the awareness campaign in other vulnerable areas. They are also exploring measures to support farmers in transitioning to alternative livelihoods to discourage the resurgence of illegal opium cultivation.

The proactive steps taken by the West Singhbhum Police have been widely appreciated by local communities and social organizations, who are hopeful that this initiative will contribute to a safer and healthier society.

The Superintendent of Police Office, West Singhbhum, Chaibasa, has urged citizens to report any suspicious activities related to narcotics and assured strict action against those involved in the illegal drug trade.
