Mukhtar Ansari legacy fades in silent home

Saturday, 29 March 2025 | Biswajeet Banerjee | Ghazipur

Once a hub of political power and influence, Mukhtar Ansari’s ancestral home in Ghazipur now stands in eerie silence. The lively gatherings, bustling convoys, and political strategising that once defined the residence are now replaced by empty chairs and fading memories.

A year has passed since the gangster-turned-politician succumbed to a heart attack on March 28, 2024, while imprisoned in Banda Jail. In this time, both his family and the political landscape of Purvanchal have undergone significant shifts.

Located in Yusufpur, 25 km from Ghazipur’s district headquarters, Mukhtar’s home, ‘Phatak,’ once played a pivotal role in regional politics. In the 1990s, decisions that shaped Purvanchal’s power structure were made here, with people saying, “Go to Phatak, the decision will be made there.” Today, except for election season, the house remains largely deserted.

Inside, an office with six chairs, a sofa, and a cot remains untouched. A photo of Mukhtar’s father, Subhanullah Ansari, still hangs on the wall, alongside images of his elder brother Sibgatullah Ansari and nephew Suhaib Ansari. Though political activity has dwindled, visitors still arrive with grievances, which MP Afzal Ansari, Mukhtar’s elder brother, listens to. Afzal has confirmed that the family will observe Mukhtar’s first death anniversary on March 30, unless it coincides with Eid, in which case it will be postponed.

Mukhtar’s son, Abbas Ansari, the sitting MLA from Mau Sadar, has been absent from his constituency since his arrest in November 2022.

He was recently granted bail on March 21, 2025, but under strict conditions—he cannot enter Mau without prior administrative permission and must stay in Lucknow. His absence has raised speculation about the future of the Ansari family’s political influence. Speaking about the situation, Afzal remarked, “The people of Mau are patient. They know everything and are watching.”

Meanwhile, Mukhtar’s wife, Afsha Ansari, remains on the run. Wanted in 11 cases, including financial fraud and illegal land deals, she has evaded arrest for years. Authorities have seized properties worth ?10 crore registered under her name and placed a ?75,000 reward for any information leading to her arrest. Despite Mukhtar’s death, she has not surfaced.

Mukhtar’s political legacy remains a subject of debate in Purvanchal. Some still believe he was a benefactor of the poor. Anshu Rai, a farmer, claimed, “He was targeted in a conspiracy. He helped the poor, which angered those with feudal mindsets.”

However, others argue that his time has passed. Retired soldier Aditya Singh remarked, “Purvanchal’s politics has changed. The era of oppression is over. Now it’s ‘Yogi Raj.’” Businessman Mayank Kumar Rai echoed similar sentiments, saying, “The days of hooliganism are gone. People live with dignity, and roads and highways are being built everywhere.”

A year after Mukhtar Ansari’s death, the once-dominant dynasty appears to be unraveling. His home, which once dictated the course of regional politics, is now a fading relic of the past. His son remains legally restricted, his wife is absconding, and his political stronghold seems to be weakening. While some still hold on to his memory, many believe Purvanchal has moved on.
