Kunal Kamra takes swipe at Nirmala Sitharaman

Thursday, 27 March 2025 | TN RAGHUNATHA | Mumbai

After his “gaddar” jibe at Maharashtra deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde and the equally sharp barb at the ruling BJP at the Centre over its theme of ‘Viksit Bharat’, stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra on Wednesday took potshots at Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and the Union government over fritting away of public money.

Undeterred by the FIR lodged against him by the Mumbai over his “Gaddar” barb against Shinde, Kamra put out one more poetic video – this time used iconic iconic track “Hawa Hawai” from film ‘Mr India’, featuring Sridevi, to target the Union Finance Minister and the Centre. He lamented how tax-payers’ money was going ‘hawa-hawai’ (frittered away) in schemes, and that the central government was ruining the roads. “The Metro is in their thoughts and they relax after digging up, leading to traffic congestion on the roads, crashing down bridges, and these are examples of ‘dictatorship’ (tanashahi),” he croons in his new song.

“It makes no difference to them (the Government) if the peoples’ aspirations are binned, or if corporate employees pay more tax than the corporates, as is in the national interest,” he says.

“The huge inflation in the country has come with the Central government, and the ‘sariwali didi’ has come to loot peoples’ earnings and rob their salaries….The woman, Nirmala-tai is also crushing the middle-classes, feeding popcorn to the masses,” he takes a jibe at Sitharaman.

Pulling no punches, Kamra said: “She is the JNU (Jawaharlal Nehru University) student that the country deserves. It’s Nehru’s mistake that she was educated there. If she had studied at the Benares Hindu University, she would have made a better Finance Minister”.

Kamra, who has been deriving a lot of mileage for the past four days after his “Gaddar” jibe against Shinde,  has — for his new video — managed to notch up almost six lakhs views, 30 thousand likes and 6 thousand-plus likes and comments.

Thirty-six-year-old Kamra — who is currently in Puducherry — had earlier refused to tender an apology for his jibe against Shinde as demanded by chief minister Devendra Fadnavis. He did not appear before the Mumbai police in response to the summons issued to him to present himself before them at 11 am on Tuesday for questioning in connection with the FIR registered against in the “gaddar” controversy. He has reportedly sought a week’s time to appear before the Mumbai police.
