Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has once again urged the Union Government to name the upcoming international airport at Halwara, Ludhiana, after the iconic martyr Shaheed Kartar Singh Sarabha.
In a letter addressed to Union Civil Aviation Minister Rammohan Naidu Kinjarapu, Mann on Friday emphasized that this move would honour the deep emotions of Punjabis and serve as a tribute to Sarabha’s immense contribution to India's freedom struggle.
Mann reminded the Minister that the Punjab Vidhan Sabha had unanimously passed a resolution on March 22, 2023, urging the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation to officially name the airport as “Shaheed Kartar Singh Sarabha International Airport”.
He highlighted that the airport’s interim terminal is expected to be ready by the end of this month, with flight operations likely to commence by year-end.
The Chief Minister noted that he had previously raised the same request with the former Union Civil Aviation Minister. Stressing the importance of preserving the legacy of India's martyrs, Mann stated that naming the airport after Sarabha would be a fitting tribute to the young Ghadar Party leader, who inspired generations with his selfless sacrifice for the country.
Drawing parallels to the recent renaming of Mohali International Airport as ‘Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport’, Mann reaffirmed the state's commitment to honouring its heroes. He concluded by underscoring the significance of naming institutions after national leaders, emphasizing their role in inspiring future generations towards patriotism and selfless service.
