Punjab, Kerala Join Forces to Address NRI Concerns

Saturday, 27 July 2024 | PNS | Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala)/Chandigarh

In a landmark collaboration, Punjab's NRI Affairs Minister Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal and Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Friday held a crucial meeting to discuss and resolve pressing issues affecting Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) from both states. The discussions aimed at forging new policies and enhancing the welfare of their diaspora communities.

During the meeting, Minister Dhaliwal emphasized the need for permitting NRIs to purchase agricultural land, a privilege currently restricted to commercial land only. Both leaders concurred to jointly petition the Union Government for a policy change, stressing that this move would significantly benefit NRIs and strengthen their ties to their homeland.

Additionally, both the leaders advocated for ensuring that Indian Missions worldwide are staffed with personnel proficient in the native languages of Punjab and Kerala. This measure would facilitate better communication and support for NRIs from these states, addressing a long-standing issue of language barriers in consular services.

"This collaboration between Punjab and Kerala showcases our commitment to addressing the concerns of our diaspora communities," said Dhaliwal. "By working together, we can bring about meaningful changes that will improve the lives of NRIs from both states."

The announcement came a day after Dhaliwal had announced that Punjab would adopt the Kerala model to combat illegal migration and ensure basic facilities for the NRIs. This announcement followed his visit to Kerala, where he studied the successful initiatives implemented by the Non-Resident Keralites Affairs (NORKA) department.

Dhaliwal also praised the Kerala model for its effective measures in preventing illegal migration and ensuring the safe and legal migration of workers. He affirmed that Punjab would replicate similar strategies to protect its citizens from illegal migration and ensure their welfare.

The Punjab government plans to establish a dedicated agency akin to NORKA, which will focus on preventing illegal migration, promoting safe and legal migration, providing welfare services to NRIs, and enhancing skill development and employment opportunities.

"The Punjab government is committed to safeguarding the interests of its citizens and will take all necessary steps to prevent illegal migration," assured Dhaliwal.

The NORKA department’s Field Agency is known for its tireless efforts in implementing various government plans, schemes, and welfare initiatives for the benefit of the diaspora community. These initiatives aim to improve the lives of non-resident Keralites by providing necessary support and assistance.
