In a stellar rise, Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh, has been ranked as the 10th best university in India by the US News and World Report for 2024-25. This global authority in educational rankings placed PU 737th worldwide and 213th in Asia, marking a significant leap from its previous global ranking of 759.
The rankings were based on a comprehensive evaluation of 2,172 educational institutions across 13 parameters, including research indices, academic programs, facilities, peer perception, and high-impact publications and citations. These assessments drew on data from the Web of Science covering 2018-2022. PU’s improved standing underscores its enhanced research output and academic influence.
Earlier in June 2024, the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR) ranked Panjab University among the top four percent of higher education institutions globally out of 21,000 surveyed. PU maintained its 10th position in India and ranked 242nd in India overall. Globally, it was recognized for its quality of education (527th) and research prowess (794th), with an overall score of 71.6.
Education World (EW) also ranked Panjab University 10th among government universities in India in 2024, scoring 1125 points. PU excelled in research and innovation, scoring 284 out of 300.
PU's Vice-Chancellor, Professor Renu Vig, praised the faculty, students, and staff for their dedication, which has been pivotal in the university's ascent. “These rankings are a testament to our collective efforts towards academic excellence and innovation,” she said, highlighting PU's strategic initiatives, including an Institutional Development Plan aligned with the vision of contributing to 'Viksit Bharat' by 2047.
The university has restructured many courses to match emerging employment trends and the guidelines of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
Panjab University's recent achievements include the highest A++ rating in NAAC accreditation, Category I status by the UGC, and improved standings in QS and THE World Rankings. PU remains a beacon of educational excellence, contributing significantly to India's and the world's academic and research landscape.
