Tuesday, 23 July 2024 | Staff Reporter | New Delhi

Light to moderate rainfall lashed parts of the national Capital on Monday leading to waterlogging in different parts of the city and causing traffic snarls on the roads of Delhi. Several low lying areas witnessed water logging including Kashmeri Gate ISBT, Najafgarh Phirni Road due to water logging at Dhansa Stand and Bahadurgarh stand, GTK Depot, NH-24 service lane which witnessing massive traffic snarls.

The Delhi traffic police issued various advisories to the commuters regarding areas facing waterlogging issues which led to traffic congestions.

In a series of tweets made by the police department, it informed that traffic was affected at Najafgarh Phirni road, GTK road, New Rohtak road, Mundka and other areas of the city due to waterlogging caused by the rainfall and asked the commuters to plan their journey accordingly.

“Traffic is affected on Najafgarh Phirni Road due to water logging at Dhansa Stand and Bahadurgarh stand. Kindly plan your journey accordingly.

Traffic is affected on GTK Road in the carriageway from Azad pur towards Mukarba Chowk and vice-versa due to waterlogging near GTK Depot. Traffic is being diverted towards Wazirabad side. Commuters can take Road No. 51 to reach NPL side,” it said on X.

It further stated, “Traffic is affected in both the carriageways of New Rohtak road due to waterlogging at Anand Parbat near Gali No.10. Traffic is affected on Rohtak Road in the carriageway from Nangloi towards Tikri Border and vice -versa due to sewer overflow and potholes on road between Rajdhani park and Mundka. Kindly avoid Mundka, Rohtak Road and take alternate route accordingly.”

Safdarjung, city’s primary weather station, recorded the maximum temperature at 36.4 degrees Celsius, 1.5 degrees above the normal. The minimum temperature settled at 29.2 degrees Celsius, two notches above the normal. Despite a slight relief from the muggy weather due to the rain, humidity level was 84 per cent at 8:30 am in the morning and 91 per cent at 5:30 pm in the evening.

Reacting to the news of waterlogging in parts of the city, Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva stated, “Only an hour of rain this afternoon turned areas from Najafgarh to Chhatarpur and Narela to Badarpur into a state of waterlogging and swamp-like conditions in unauthorized colonies.”

He further claimed that the problem is being faced by everyone alike in the city. “It’s not just the residents of unauthorised colonies or slums who are troubled by the waterlogging; even residents of well-established colonies faced issues due to waterlogging in the internal streets,” he claimed, adding that many underpasses, including Kishanganj, were submerged with just a little rain, and major intersections, including I.T.O., were waterlogged, causing traffic to come to a standstill.

“Delhi residents pray for rain all summer, but due to the negligence, incompetence, and corruption of the Kejriwal government, drains and sewers are not cleaned. As a result, as soon as it rains, Delhi residents start praying for the rain to stop,” Sachdeva stated.
