MMCH spearheads campaign for anti rabies awareness, management

Saturday, 05 October 2024 | PNS | DALTONGANJ

The Government of India has set a target for Free Rabies India by 2030.  It has a theme 'Breaking Rabies Barriers'.

On the last day of the week long anti rabies campaign a little over one hour useful and informative session on post dog bite care and management was held in the MMCH Daltonganj today.

Medical superintendent Dr Prof Dharmender Kumar steered the show. He was assisted by Dr Q Hassan, Dr Ankit Verma, Dr R K Ranjan, Dr Sushil Pandey and Dr Anup Kr Singh.

It was medical superintendent Dr Dharmender Kumar who stole the show by his precise and straight talk on the management of the post dog bite situation.

Noted surgeon Dr Sushil Pandey said "It is advisable to have proper and adequate anti rabies vaccines along with the shot of immunoglobulin where there is a dog bite event."

Dr Pandey said "There was a dog bitten boy in Garhwa who had anti rabies vaccines but despite that he died. Hence, a shot of immunoglobulin is most preferred."

Dr Q Hassan in his keynote address said "Keep watch on the rogue dog that has bitten for 10 days. If it dies within this period, it portends no good. And if it survives it is good. And in both the situations anti rabies vaccines must not be any miss. One must take shots of it. There must not be any laxity in taking anti rabies shots."

Dr Ankit Verma explained "Where a dog, cat, monkey etc has scratched the body of a human but blood has not come out, then there is no reason to panic. But if bleeding occurs, just rush to have anti rabies vaccines. There is no room for delay."

Dr Anup Kr Singh informed that in the first 6 months of the year 2024 there have been 1086 dog bite cases. He said there is no dearth of the anti rabies vaccines.

On an average 10 plus new cases of dog bites come a day in the MMCH Daltonganj.

It was the medical superintendent Dr Dharmender Kumar who answered and cleared the doubts.

First, what if a milching cow is bitten by a dog, should its milk be consumed by humans.

Dr Dharmender Kumar "Yes. Drink its milk without the least of tension. You are not going to be affected."

Second, what if the breast feeding mother is a dog bite victim, can she breastfeed her baby.

Here Dr Dharmender Kumar said "Yes. Very much. There is no problem."

When Dr Dharmender Kumar made this statement, he was corroborated by doctors like Ranjan, Hassan, Pandey who all said in uniformity and unanimity that milk is safe no matter whether it comes from a cow or mother if bitten by a dog.

Medical superintendent asked the dog lovers who pet them in their houses to keep their pet dogs well immunised without fail.

If a dog bite victim is an Ayushman card holder then for his full anti rabies vaccines the concerned hospital will get  1760 rupees informed Dr Dharmender Kumar.

A dog bite on head is far more dangerous than a bite on leg. Fatality is inevitable if anti rabies vaccines are a miss. There is no cure for the complications like hydrophobia, anathema to light and air by the bite victim.
