Maulana Tauqeer Raza detained during protest

Saturday, 10 February 2024 | PNS | Lucknow

Chief of Ittehad-e-Millat Council, Bareilly Sharif, Maulana Tauqeer Raza, was detained by the police on Friday after he gave a call for ‘Jail Bharo’ over the Gyanvapi issue.

Earlier, supporters of Maulana Tauqeer Raza on Friday created ruckus in Bareilly over the Gyanvapi case court order and started a ‘Jail Bharo’ agitation.

The police and the district administration were alert following Maulana Tauqeer Raza’s call for protest on the Gyanvapi issue.

After the Friday prayers in Bareilly, some youths tried to disturb peace by pelting stones and also damaging some vehicles but as the police arrived in time the troublemakers escaped.

Stone-pelting was reported in the Shyamganj market under the Baradari police station, where the troublemakers pelted stones at a shop under the bridge, injuring many people. The police later brought the situation under control.

Earlier, Maulana Raza had talked about his arrest and alleged that there was an atmosphere of hatred in the country.

The police made strict security arrangements across the Bareilly district to avert any untoward incidents. Over 1,400 policemen were deployed to cordon off the Islamia ground where Maulana Raza threatened to stage a demonstration on Friday. Police force was also deployed outside Maulana Tauqeer Raza’s house and the market near the Dargah was completely closed on Friday. The cops also sealed the district boundaries by putting barricades to check entry of troublemakers.
