Mahanadi boat tragedy: 5 more bodies found

The death toll rose to seven including three minor boys and three women in the tragic boat mishap in the Mahanadi river in Jharsuguda district with five more bodies recovered on Saturday.

 

ODRAF and Fire Service personnel recovered the bodies during a search operation in the Hirakud Dam here. The search operation was underway to trace one more missing person.

 

All deceased persons were from Kharseni of neighbouring State of Chhattisgarh. They were travelling on the ferry to Patharseni under Ambavona block when the incident took place.

 

More than 50 passengers were onboard when the boat capsized in the Hirakud Dam reservoir near Sarada Ghat under the Rengali police limits on Friday afternoon. While the fishermen managed to rescue over 40 passengers, others went missing.

 

The Fire Service personnel engaged in the search operation fished out two bodies from the water while six others remained untraceable on Friday. However, the team recovered five more bodies on Saturday morning.
