Gun violence in Capital: One dead, another injured

Sunday, 10 November 2024 | Staff Reporter | New Delhi

A 24-year-old man was killed and another injured in two incidents of firing carried out by three juveniles in separate areas of northeast Delhi within a span of 10 minutes.

According to the police on Saturday, the accused first fired at a person in Welcome's Kabir Nagar around 1 am, looted his scooty and rode it to a location in neighbouring Jyoti Nagar and fired at a house.

While Nadeem and Shahnawaz received bullet injuries in the first incident, nobody was harmed in the second. Police said the two injured were taken to a hospital where Nadeem was declared dead, while Shahnawaz is recuperating.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (northeast) Rakesh Paweriya said the three suspects have been apprehended and are being interrogated. "They first received information about firing in Kabir Nagar and when a team was sent, it found three empty cartridges and a motorcycle lying on the roadside," he added.

When they enquired about it, police found that the motorbike belonged to the accused who left it there and fled with the scooty that belonged to one of the victims.

Meanwhile, another PCR call was received at 1.26 am from the neighbouring Jyoti Nagar area about firing at a house by three men on a scooty.

The caller, identified as Rahul, said the accused came on a scooty and opened fire at his house but no one was injured in the incident. Six empty and a live cartridge were found at the spot.

Another officer said the accused were later apprehended from the same area. It is suspected that the accused had a financial dispute involving Rs 10,000 with Nadeem. They wanted to target him but Shahnawaz also received bullet injury in his leg as he was standing nearby. The accused are being further interrogated to ascertain the exact cause of shooting at both the places.

A case under section 103 (1) and 3 (5) of the BNS and 27 of the Arms Act has been registered at the Welcome Police Station and under section 109 (1) and 3(5) of the BNS and 25 and 27 of the Arms Act has been registered in Jyoti Nagar as well.

Senior AAP leader and Delhi minister Saurabh Bharadwaj on Saturday criticised the BJP over twin firing incidents in Delhi, saying the city has given the party seven MPs but it thinks it is not responsible at all for law and order in the city.A man was killed and another injured in two incidents of firing carried out by three people in separate areas of northeast Delhi in a span of 10 minutes during the early hours of Sunday. Addressing a press conference here, Bharadwaj said the BJP thinks it has no responsibility as far as Delhi's law and order is concerned. "That is why we do not see any statement by any of their leaders or the LG (lieutenant governor) on such incidents." "The BJP thinks that they have no responsibility of law and order in Delhi. The people of the city give them seven MPs, but still they don't issue any statement regarding such incidents or any plan to improve law and order," he said. The common people and businessmen are living in fear in the national capital, the minister added.

Meanwhile Delhi BJP Spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor lambasted the AAP government saying it is unfortunate that Delhi Government ministers who have failed Delhi on every front are trying to portray that Delhi's law and order situation has collapsed. Delhi BJP Spokesperson has said most of the crime incidents reported during last few months are actually incidents of crime not for extortion but for personal enmity. Even the incident on Friday at Welcome Colony was result of business monetary dispute. The victim knew the assailants as was in earlier incident at Farsh Bazar. Delhi BJP Spokesperson has said incidents of firing need to be checked but Delhiites appreciate the almost 100% crime detection rate of Delhi Police.
