Mahana convenes all-party meeting on Sunday

Friday, 26 July 2024 | PNS | Lucknow

Ahead of the monsoon session of the Uttar Pradesh assembly, Speaker Satish Mahana has convened an all-party meeting here on Sunday to ensure smooth conduct of the proceedings of the House.

The meeting of the business advisory committee of the assembly has also been convened on the same day to finalise the agenda of the session.

As per the tentative agenda of the session approved by the speaker, there are likely to be five sittings of the House from July 29 to August 2.

The government has not given any indication of bringing important bills like the Finance Bill for supplementary grants for the current fiscal 2024-25. The government is likely to seek additional grants in view of the need of resources for the Kumbh mela in Prayagraj in January next year.

Moreover, the Yogi Adityanath government would like to put its best foot forward ahead of the coming bypolls to 10 assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh. These seats fell vacant as the incumbent MLAs were elected to Lok Sabha during the recent parliamentary elections.

Besides the bypolls, the monsoon session is important as it is the first session after the Lok Sabha elections concluded on June 1, in which the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party faced huge setback and its tally was reduced to mere 33 seats out of total 80 Lok Sabha seats in UP.

The opposition Samajwadi Party, upbeat after its improved tally of Lok Sabha seats, would do its best to fish in troubled waters of the BJP.

The SP has already fired potshots on the BJP following the rumblings in the ruling party with Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya and BJP state president Bhupindar Chaudhary trying to put the entire blame at the doors of the Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for the poor performance of the party in Lok Sabha elections.

SP spokesman Rajendra Chaudhary said the BJP’s double-engine governments at the Centre and in UP appear to be on a course of confrontation.

“The state government did not say anything when Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman did not make a mention of UP in the Union budget,” Chaudhary said.

The SP, which is yet to appoint a leader of opposition in the assembly, has already given indications that it will leave no opportunity to target the BJP government in the monsoon session.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is busy setting his house in order ahead of the monsoon session.

For the past couple of days, the chief minister has been holding divisional meetings and regularly meeting BJP MLAs, MPs, and organisational leaders to get feedback about the 2024 poll outcome.

Yogi has directed the divisional commissioners and district magistrates to ensure that complete information is given by them well in time about the questions or other issues raised by legislators in the assembly and legislative council.

Meanwhile, Principal Secretary (Parliamentary Affairs) JP Singh, in a letter sent to all divisional commissioners and district magistrates, said there should be no doubt about the facts provided and the quality of information given by them. He said all the information being sent should be signed by the respective district magistrates.

In another letter, JP Singh said no meeting of divisional and district committees, having the MLAs/MLCs as members, should be convened by them during the monsoon session.
