Jharkhand students should strive for fully funded Ph D programmes in US: Dr Pawan Kumar

In US, UK and Germany, all the Ph D programmes in public universities are fully funded by the respective institutes and carry lucrative stipends also therefore students of Jharkhand should strive for selection and enrolment there. Out of every 100 overseas applicants hardly 5-6 get selected based on their CV, earlier research work and justification of why he/she wants to pursue research in that particular laboratory or university.

Dr Pawan Kumar, Associate Professor, Stony Brook University, New York, USA outlined these points while delivering an awareness lecture at College of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry of BAU on Tuesday. Drafting of CV and application is very important and students should master that skill. They should have adequate knowledge of the lab or institute where they want to pursue PG programmes and this knowledge can be acquired through the webpage of the institute and other online content. In appointments against scientific positions in the US, more weightage is given on research papers, aptitude and dedication towards work than that of disciplines of degrees. “That is why I was appointed in the department of microbiology despite having Master’s in Veterinary Physiology and Ph D in Pharmacology”, he added. He also replied to the queries of students regarding Master’s, Ph D and Post Doc programmes in the US and assured his all kind guidance and support in that process.

Dr Pawan, an alumnus of BAU veterinary faculty has two postdocs from Blood Centre of Wisconsin and University of Pittsburgh, US and has contributed a lot in animal immunity. He also delivered a technical lecture on ‘Immune and epithelial cell interaction at the intestinal mucosa’ for the students and teachers of the college.

Dean of the Veterinary Faculty Dr Sushil Prasad welcomed the speaker while coordinator of the event Dr Nandani Kumari proposed a vote of thanks. Students Prasenjit and Amisha anchored the programme. Dean PG Dr MK Gupta and Associate Dean of Dairy Technology College Dr AK Pandey also spoke on the occasion.
