Hearing a public interest litigation filed by one Shyamanad Pandey, The Jharkhand High Court on Tuesday directed the Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) to ensure that no meat and fish is being sold in the open in the City. The court has also directed the Ranchi Police to take strict action against officers of the police station area where such items are being sold in the open.
The bench of Justice Sujit Narayan Prasad and Justice Arun Kumar Rai have verbally instructed the civic body to inspect chicken and meat shops and check whether they are following the license conditions or not. The next hearing for the case will now be on July 16.
Pandey in his petition stated that illegal butcher shops are operational on a large number in the State capital. Breaking municipal rules, cadavers of animals continue to hang in the open in such shops. Provisions for a commissioned slaughterhouse in Kanke are also there but very few owners take the animals there for culling.
Despite repeated attempts by RMC to ban the sale of chicken, meat and fish from unlicensed shops to ensure hygiene, the sale for the same continues to remain unabated in the City.
The State Government has also constructed an abattoir in the outskirts of the City with a capacity of slaughtering about 3,000 animals on a daily basis.
