The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Jharkhand organized a two-day conference and exhibition, the CII Jharkhand Safety Talk 2024, with the theme “Equitable and Sustainable Strategies: Building a Safer Future for All.” The event gathered over 250 delegates, 1,000 business visitors, and featured 40 exhibitors, sparking meaningful discussions on safety innovations and best practices across industries.
In the opening session, Ranjot Singh, Chairman of CII Jharkhand State Council and Managing Director of Emdet Jamshedpur Pvt Ltd, expressed gratitude to speakers and attendees for their active participation, celebrating collective achievements in advancing safety standards within Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). He underscored the critical role of continuous improvement and collaboration in fostering a culture of safety. Malcom Dunbar, Corporate Safety expert from Levy, highlighted the ethical responsibility of ensuring zero harm in workplaces, citing challenges like incident underreporting and complex operational risks, and emphasized the moral and financial imperative of prioritizing employee safety.
Jaspal Singh, Partner at Abreast Engineering, introduced a foundational approach to MSME safety focused on the pillars of awareness, accountability, and availability. He stressed the necessity of policies against child labor and sexual harassment to create a universally safe workplace. Singh also unveiled the Behaviour Safety Violation Card, an online tool empowering employees to report unsafe behaviors discreetly, fostering accountability and commitment to a safe work environment.
Tata Cummins Pvt Ltd’s General Manager of Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE), Mukesh Singh, spoke on the rigorous safety practices essential in high-risk environments like engine test cells. Singh highlighted the importance of regular equipment inspections, emergency response training, and robust monitoring systems, essential in handling hazardous materials and high-pressure operations. He called for a strong safety awareness culture to ensure both personnel and equipment are protected.
Hemaleka Balu, Senior Manager of Projects at Tata Chemicals Ltd, focused on process safety in dynamic work environments. She stressed the integration of process safety management into daily operations, the importance of risk assessments, and advanced monitoring technologies to detect early hazards. Moderated by Ranadip Das, Chief Process Safety at Tata Steel Ltd, the session emphasized fostering open communication and employee engagement as crucial elements for safety.
On Day 2, Neeraj Kumar Sinha, Convenor of the CII Jharkhand Safety Panel and Chief-Safety at Tata Steel Ltd, joined other safety experts in sharing insights on industry safety protocols. The event concluded with attendees pledging to continue enhancing safety standards, aiming for a safer and more sustainable future across all sectors in Jharkhand and beyond.
