20,000 people booked for permit violations till mid July

An analysis by the Delhi Traffic Police revealed a staggering surge in the number of permit violations on the roads of the national Capital with more than 20,000 people being booked for such violations till mid July, 45 per cent higher as compared to the corresponding period last year.

A statement by the police department on Sunday said that they have reported a significant surge in the prosecution of permit violations in the current year which comes comes as part of a broader crackdown on traffic rule violations aimed at improving road safety and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.

A senior police official stated, "The Delhi Traffic Police booked 20,009 violators for permit violations, a significant rise from 13,751 in 2023. This marks an increase of nearly 45 per cent in prosecutions compared to the previous year.”

According to the police, this rise can be attributed to stricter enforcement measures, and a comprehensive strategy aimed at addressing non-compliance among commercial vehicle operators. Specialised teams have been deployed across the city to conduct regular checks at strategic locations, including major intersections, highways, and commercial hubs, they said.

Furthermore, the police have conducted a comprehensive analysis of the ten traffic circles with the highest number of permit violation challans issued till July 15, the officials said.

This investigation identified specific areas where these violations are most frequent. By pinpointing these locations, targeted enforcement measures can be implemented to improve adherence to traffic rules, they said.

Kotwali with 1,406 challans is the area where maximum of such violations happened in the period followed by Daryagnaj with 1,279 challans, Civil Lines with 1,263, Madhu Vihar with 1,123, Lajpat Nagar with 1,020, Bhajanpura with 980, Sadar Bazar with 934, Kamla Market with 802, Karol Bagh with 754, and Nand Nagri with 722, the data showed.

"The crackdown on permit violations is part of a larger initiative to enhance road safety and reduce traffic congestion,” a senior police officer said.

“We have emphasised the importance of adhering to permit regulations, as non-compliance poses significant risks to public safety and contributes to traffic-related issues," the officer said.

In response to the surge in prosecutions, the Delhi Traffic Police has also launched awareness campaigns to educate vehicle owners and operators about the importance of obtaining and maintaining valid permits, the officials said.

These campaigns aim to inform the public about the legal requirements and the consequences of violations, thereby encouraging voluntary compliance, they said.

This surge in prosecution is expected to continue as we aim to sustain the momentum of the enforcement drive, they said.
