Timed with the 350th coronation anniversary of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, a captivating collection of 115 larger than life oil paintings, portraying a journey through the life and legacy of one of India's most iconic historical figures and the great Maratha ruler has been opened for public  at the National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA) in the national capital till June 21.

The Maratha warrior king was crowned on June 6, 1674, at the fort from where he had laid the foundation of “Hindavi-Swaraj” or self-rule of Hindu people. The inauguration day was timed with the 350th anniversary of Shivaji's coronation.

The Union Culture Ministry plans to take this exhibition, ‘Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj: Celebration of the 350th Anniversary of the Great Coronation’ on a nationwide tour to raise awareness about the iconic leader, said Union Culture Secretary Govid Mohan after inaugurating the exhibition on Friday.

Painted by Marathi father-son artist duo, Shrikant Chougule and Gautam Chougule, each painting vividly portrays key moments from Shivaji's life--from his early days receiving the saffron flag from his father Shahaji to his strategic military triumphs and the establishment of the Maratha kingdom. Through their skillful artistry, the Chougules bring to life the courage, determination, and resilience of Shivaji, inviting viewers to reflect on the great Maratha leader’s profound legacy. Shivaji is also known for his maritime skills, having launched Maratha Navy at Durgadi Fort Kalyan Year OCT 1657.

Mohan, said that Deepak Gore who collected the paintings has "agreed to gift" the ‘treasure’ to the Union Culture Ministry, and there is a plan to give it a permanent space at Indira Gandhi National Centre for Art (IGNCA) in Delhi.

On the exhibition, the Culture Ministry said steeped in years of experience of managing artist Jehangir Vazifdar's gallery, Gore's passion was ignited during a 1996 visit to the museums of London and Paris. Witnessing the grandeur of European oil paintings, he envisioned creating a collection with a powerful, locally rooted narrative.

The project began in 2000 and partnering with the renowned Chougule’s, Gore set about on this ambitious journey. A pivotal moment arrived when their paths crossed with legendary historian Balwant Moreshwar Purandare, affectionately known as Babasaheb Purandare, the ministry said.

Babasaheb, an authority on the legacy of Shivaji, became their guiding light, meticulously ensuring historical accuracy in every detail, from the warriors' attire to the majestic recreations of palaces and forts.
