Friday, 02 August 2024 | Staff Reporter | BHOPAL

There is a trend of rain in Bhopal for an average of 14 days in the month of August and in this duration, 13 inches of rainfall is recorded. However, the rain quota has been exceeded only in 5 out of the last 10 years.

Around 18 years ago in the year 2006, a record 35.6 inches of rainfall was recorded in the entire month, which is an overall record. This year, there is also a record of 12 inches of rain in 24 hours. There is a period of heavy rain in the beginning of August. This time too, there was heavy rain on the very first day, Thursday.

The two months of monsoon July and August - are such when about 28 inches of rainfall is recorded, which is up to 75% of the total rainfall of the season.

Rain has been continuing in Bhopal since this morning. Due to this, the drains also got filled with water. In the afternoon, a van full of school children was passing through the Karond area. Then it got stuck in the flow of water. The van was going towards Vinayak Valley in front of Vyanjan Restaurant. Residents took the children out. After this, the van was also taken out with the help of JCB. This averted a big accident.

Residents said that the Municipal Corporation did not clean the drain properly. There is also encroachment around. Due to this, water started flowing over the drain. If the cleaning had been done, the water would not have come up and the van would not have got stuck.

On the very first day of August, it has been raining intermittently in Bhopal ,so far, more than 25 inches of rainfall has been recorded in Bhopal in this monsoon season, which is more than 70 percent. Due to continuous rain, the figure is continuously increasing.

In the current season as soon as one foot of water comes in Upper Lake the sluice gates of Bhadbhada Dam will also open.

The water level in Bhopal's lifeline Upper Lake has reached 1665.85 feet till Thursday, while the full tank level is 1666.80 feet. According to this, the pond is not even one feet empty. Due to not much rain in the catchment area for three days, there was no water in the pond, but on Thursday the water started increasing.  Bhopal's three water bodies i.e., Upper Lake, Bhadbhada and Kaliasot Dam are connected to each other. The water of Kolans River first reaches Bada Talab. When the pond is full, the gates of Bhadbhada Dam are opened. After this, the sluice gates of Kaliyasot Dam also open. The gates of Kaliyasot Dam have been opened for testing.
