The Centre is likely to hold a special joint sitting of both Houses of Parliament on November 26, to mark the 75th anniversary of adoption of the Constitution. Sources said the Winter Session may start from November 25, and the special joint sitting is likely to be held in the Central Hall of the Samvidhan Sadan (Old Parliament Building), where the Constituent Assembly adopted the Constitution in 1949. The Constitution came into effect on January 26, 1950.
The joint session is expected to feature discussions on the Constitution's role in shaping Indian democracy, with participation from leaders of various political parties reflecting on the principles of justice, liberty, equality and fraternity. President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other dignitaries are expected to address the joint session.
Earlier, November 26 used to be celebrated as National Law Day, but in 2015 the Narendra Modi government announced it as Constitution Day, marking the 125th birth anniversary of Dr BR Ambedkar. Sources said elaborate planning is under way and a series of activities have been planned, including the making of documentaries, translating the debates of Constituent Assembly in nearly two dozen languages, and a public march to mark the significance of the Constitution.
In the run up to Lok Sabha elections this summer both the National Defence Academy (NDA) and Congress-led INDIA Bloc parties engaged in verbal duel in projecting themselves as guardian and disciple of the Indian Constitution framed by Dr Ambedkar.
While INDIA Bloc has been slamming Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for “destroying” the Constitution and constitutional values, the ruling party and its allies have been targeting Congress on the same issue, saying the Congress grouping has destroyed the value of Constituion.
On the schedule, may be the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, to be passed in Parliament's winter session. The Bill aims to ensure transparency in Waqf board operations.
