After sweeping the by-elections six-nil the Trinamool Congress (TMC) plans to steal a tactical march over the Congress by ensuring an atmosphere free of commotion in the Lok Sabha so that some issues can be debated and the government can be compelled to reply them.
Taking part in a TMC National Working Committee (TMCNWC) meeting West Bengal (WB) Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday spelt out a clear policy line for the elected representatives in Delhi, where "the honourable members will raise questions on a number of burning issues such as price rise, unemployment, national fertilizer policy, central deprivation of WB in rural housing scheme, non-payment of funds despite collecting GST from the state," Chandrima Bhattacharya, the state finance minister said.
Besides the party would also raise the "Manipur issue in Parliament as the ongoing violence has impacted the entire North East while the government has failed to contain it," the minister said. He added that instead of contributing to fireworks inside the House that was "expected in the Winter Session," the TMC would "try to ensure a situation where the burning questions can be raised and discussed so that the government can be forced to come out with comprehensive answers on these issues." When a related question was asked as to why TMC would not join the Monday's meeting attended by the of Indian National Democratic Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) constituents or whether her party would join the future meetings the minister said such things had not been discussed in the TMCWC meeting.
Bhattacharya also said that issues such as Adani or Waqf Bill were not discussed in the TMCNWC meeting. “No such issues were discussed in the meeting today because it was a national working committee meeting," she said. Apparently the TMC leader's statement airing Mamata Banerjee's policy line tended to indicate a new tactic to be adopted by the party inside the House, which is different from the one that could be adopted by INDIA partners.
The new tactical stand point comes close on the heels of senior party MP Kalyan Banerjee advising the Congress to accept Mamata Banerjee as the leader of the INDIA alliance.
"All the Opposition parties nationally should accept Mamata Banerjee as their leader. Some parties should set aside their ego and accept Mamata Banerjee as the leader of the Opposition against the BJP," Kalyan Banerjee said.
On whether the TMC's decision to walk a different path from the Congress was the result of the same outlook of projecting Mamata Banerjee as a more effective leader against the BJP, a senior leader and an MP said, "It has been repeatedly proved that she is the only person who can handle the BJP and none else. So it is time she should assume the centre stage."
Back to the decisions taken in the TMCNWC, Bhattacharya also said that it has been decided that three senior MPs in Delhi Sudip Bandopadhyay, Derek O'Brien and Kakoli Ghoshdastidar would constitute the disciplinary committee in Parliament. Similar disciplinary committees were constituted in State Assembly and the State party unit also.
