After the doctors it is the turn of rural Bengal to rebel. Villagers deprived of pucca houses under the rural housing scheme have rebelled in a number of districts against alleged corruption in allocation of funds for housing.
Angry villagers from Hooghly, North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, Burdwan West, Birbhum, East Midnapore, Malda districts demonstrated outside respective panchayat and block development offices alleging corruption and favouritism on the part of Trinamool Congress leadership in enlisting eligible recipients of houses under the Banglar Baari (House of Bengal) scheme.
The project has been floated by the Mamata Banerjee Government as an alternative to the central Prime Minister Awaas Yojna scheme alleging discrimination by the Centre in allocation of funds.
"We had submitted all the requisite forms and necessary certificates but our names have not appeared in the list of recipients," said Asma Khatoon a homemaker from Canning in South 24 Parganas. Her neighbor Azizul, Rehmat and Bilasi too raised similar questions.
At Mathurapur in the same district villagers like Swapna, Anima and Dipti too agitated before the panchayat and block offices asking "why should we not get houses when people who already have two-storey pucca houses and toilets are getting them?"
Earlier the State had decided to construct houses for villagers who had been left out of the Centre's housing scheme.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee who had been crying hoarse for the past couple of years alleging deprivation by the Centre on account of releasing funds to the tune of Rs 1.50 lakh crore on account of 100-days' work, PM Awaas, rural roads and other schemes had on Tuesday
"The state government has decided to build houses for all people in the state who have been deprived under the central scheme," the Chief Minister had told the officials in a meeting and asked State Panchayat Minister Pradip Majumdar to take stock of the people who had yet to receive houses.
The Centre had blocked funds following widespread complaints of corruption from the villagers in distribution of houses. "The Centre has been sending funds but these are going to the pockets of the TMC leaders … and their relatives and cronies … so the Centre is asking to account for the previous funds before releasing subsequent tranches," State Opposition Leader Suvendu Adhikari said.
