Chief Minister (CM) of West Bengal (WB), Mamata Banerjee, finally broke her silence on Bangladesh violence and the arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das Prabhu, a monk of the International Society of Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) saying her party stood united with the Union government in that regard.
"Bangladesh is a different country and we as a State have no jurisdiction in that regard. We have not supposed to interfere in their matters," the CM said adding she was "concerned" at what was happening in Bangladesh adding, "While we feel sorry inside, we follow the policies set by the Centre."
The CM said that she had a talk with the ISKCON representatives on the matter. "I inquired about what had happened," she said in a guarded language. Her nephew and Trinamool Congress general secretary, Abhishek Banerjee too put out similar views saying his party stood with the Centre as it was an international issue. "We have not been given mandate for talking on international issues. This is the job of the Union government and whatever decision they take we will support that as a party," he said.
The CM had been facing flak from the Opposition BJP for keeping silent on sensitive issue like the one that was taking shape in Bangladesh where the minority Hindus had been under a systematic attack from the hardline Islamists.
Banerjee's statement came on a day when the thousands of supports of Hindu Jagaran Manch on Thursday marched towards the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission and clashed with the police forces --- at Beck Bagan area of South Kolkata --- some 800 metres from the Bangladesh Mission office
