Condition of fasting doctors deteriorates on fifth day in Bengal

The condition of the junior doctors sitting on an indefinite fast in demand of Justice in the RG Kar rape and murder case worsened on the fifth day of the fast, doctors attending on them said.

The condition of two doctors Aniket and Snigdha was particularly bad, sources said adding 120 hours of ceaseless fasting had started impacting their kidneys and livers and "things can go for worse anytime."

"Though we have an ICU ambulance ready to ferry them to hospital they are not willing … Both the doctors refused to leave Esplanade the place where they are fasting," said Dr Saikat Neogi who was one of many medics monitoring the junior doctors' health.

Seven doctors from various medical colleges including the RGKMCH have been on an indefinite fast demanding apart from justice for the RG Kar victim other measures including immediate installation of centralized referral system with real-time monitoring, foolproof security measures for the medical staff inside Government hospitals, installation of CCTV camera network, restrooms and washrooms for the doctors end to the threat syndicate in government run medical colleges that had allegedly led to large-scale corruption and extortion racket inside the medical colleges etc, the doctors have also been demanding the removal of Principal Health Secretary NS Nigam.

A mid-night dialogue between State Chief Secretary Manoj Pant and a delegation of junior doctors alleged failed with the doctors alleging that the officials only "expressed intent" but gave no written assurance on deadline by when things would be implemented. "The administration had nothing new to offer … they were evasive and were only buying time apparently to let the Durga Puja holidays pass off … but we are asking them to consider the immediacy and urgency of the issue," the doctors said. The Home Secretary and Health Secretary were also present in the talks.

"In this situation if something happens to the junior doctors then the Government will be held fully responsible," said Dr Kinjal Nanda adding if the situation of the doctors aggravated they could even have hypoglycemia. 

Meanwhile in a related development the doctors of SSKM Postgraduate medical college and Hospital the biggest such facility in eastern India too started resigning their posts with 40 of t hem on Thursday offered mass resignation in reaction to what they called "Government's insensitivity to the situation of the doctors." With Thursday's resignations the number of doctors resigning their posts reached 300, sources said.
