A 47-year-old woman was crushed under the wheels of a Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) truck after she fell from a scooter that was hit by an unidentified vehicle near Nauroji Nagar area here on Wednesday. According to the police, the woman's husband sustained minor injuries in the accident that took place in the evening. "A PCR call regarding a fatal accident near Nauroji Nagar was received at Safdarjung Enclave police station. When the police reached at the spot in front of WTC Ring Road, he found that DL1GC7087 Subhash Nagar Depot Garbage Truck hit scooty No DL3SCN4325 and a lady (pillion rider) died on the spot while scooty driver was safe," the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southwest) Surendra Choudhary said.
Har Devi and her 49-year-old husband Shyam Charan were on their way to Nangloi when the unidentified vehicle hit them from behind. Devi, who was riding pillion, fell down and was mowed down by the MCD garbage truck following them, Charan told police. The truck driver identified as 34-year-old Jaan Mohammad fled the spot but was arrested later, police said. Talking to reporters, Charan said, "My wife fell onto the road and a dumper coming from behind ran over her resulting in her instant death. The driver had the time to stop the vehicle but he failed".
A senior police officer said that teams have been formed to catch the driver of the unidentified vehicle. A case under section 281 (Rash driving or riding on a public way) and 106 (death caused by negligence) of BNS.
