Three kanwariyas were killed and 12 others were injured when a truck rammed into a tractor-trolley on Delhi-Haridwar national highway on Monday.
The accident took place in Muzaffarnagar when the kanwariyas (devotees of Lord Shiva) were going to Haridwar to bring water from the river Ganga, Station House Officer of Mansurpur, R Tyagi, said.
The deceased were identified as Ajay (23), Rohit (22) and Anmol (22).
The injured were admitted to a hospital and their conditions were stated to be stable.
The bodies of the victims were sent for post-mortem and the truck was seized.
In a separate mishap reported from Farrukhabad, two minor brothers drowned after falling in a waterlogged pit in Nawabganj area on Sunday, police said. According to police sources, Arun (11) and his brother Anshul (9) of village Salempur Tyori, had gone to a brick kiln located some distance from the village in the afternoon. The duo fell into the water filled in a deep waterlogged pit and drowned. By the time their family members reached the spot and pulled the children out of the water, they had already died.
Police registered the case and started the investigation.
Meanwhile, two people, including a minor, were killed after being struck by lightning in Ballia district, police said on Monday.
Rakesh (12) of Shivpur Diyar Nambri in Ballia City Kotwali area had gone to his farm on Sunday. In the evening, when he was returning home by bicycle, he was struck by lightning and died on the spot.
Pankaj (18) of Revati town was killed after being struck by lightning on Sunday evening. He had gone fishing in the Dah Taal adjacent to the town when it started raining. Pankaj was hit by lightning and died on the spot.
Police sent the bodies for post-mortem.
In Bhadohi, a married woman allegedly committed suicide by jumping into a well following arguments with her mother-in-law, police said on Monday.
The incident took place in Khamaria locality of Aura area on Sunday when Santoshi Devi (18) jumped into the well following a dispute with her mother-in-law, Santara Devi, Circle Officer Umeshwar Prabhat Singh said.
The body was taken out of the well by police personnel on Sunday night and sent for post-mortem.
It prima facie appears to be a case of suicide, police said, adding that, an FIR had been registered on the basis of a complaint from the victim’s mother, Singora Devi, against the deceased’s husband, Santosh Yadav, and his mother Santara Devi for allegedly killing her daughter for dowry.
A probe is on.
