Members of the Pradesh Student Congress gheraoed the residence of Higher Education Minister Atanu Sabyasachi Nayak here on Thursday protesting against the State Government’s decision to cancel students' union elections in the universities and degree colleges,
The agitators led by Student Congress State president Yasir Nawaj tried to barge into the Minister’s residence which led to a scuffle with police personnel. The agitators also burned effigies of the Higher Education Minister and the Chief Minister. Later, the demonstrators were detained by police.
Nawaj said that despite repeated demands from the students, the government is not been holding the students’ union polls. By stopping the elections, the government is murdering democracy in the State.
“Our only demand is that the government must revoke its decision of cancelling students’ union elections. Otherwise, we will stage protests across the State in the coming days. We will follow the Higher Education Minister everywhere if our demand is not fulfilled,” he added.
