In a significant step towards modernization and automation, SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP), has successfully implemented a groundbreaking project focused on "Live Monitoring of Temperature and Humidity in Cranes and Electrical Control Rooms" of Hot Strip Mill-2. This initiative falls under the Industry 4.0 framework and aims to ensure the optimal performance and longevity of critical automation components.
The project was inaugurated by Sudip Pal Chaudhury, CGM, (Instrumentation and Automation), in the presence of R.K. Muduli, CGM, (Hot Strip Mill-2), R. Kujur, GM and HOS (E) D. K. Yadav, GM and HOS (O), R. K. Singhal, GM and HOS (M), all of HSM 2 and various other senior officers of the Plant on 6th October, 2023. This project marks a significant milestone in enhancing operational efficiency and ensuring the smooth functioning of vital processes.
The heart of this project lies in the implementation of cutting-edge sensors carefully installed across various key areas of the Hot Strip Mill-2, including the Re-Heating Furnace, Roughing Mill, Finishing Mill, Down Coilers, and Pallet Conveyors. Additionally, highly advanced automatic cranes in the Slab Yard and Coil Yard are equipped with state-of-the-art Crane Location Tracking Systems. These systems comprise PLCs and Drives from Siemens, Hitachi, and ABB, enabling seamless communication and control.
Key features of this innovative project include real-time monitoring, data storage and trend analysis, alarm generation and alert communication.
The credit of the conceptualization and successful implementation of this project goes to the team led by Sunaram Soren, GM (HSM-2), and members B.N. Panda, GM, Chidananda Nayak, GM, Jyotirmay Jena, Senior Manager, Preetam Ranjan Sahoo, Deputy Manager, Dilip Kumar Sahoo, Assistant Manager, and Bibhudhendra Behera, Assistant Manager, of HSM-2. The overall program coordination and software feature explanation was managed by Jyotirmay Jena.
