Old lady, grandson killed in accident in Barabanki

An old woman and her grandson were killed while seven members of the family were injured when a speeding van returning from a wedding ceremony went out of control and overturned into a roadside ditch in Fatehpur Kotwali area of Barabanki late on Saturday night,

According to the police, the accident occurred as the driver dozed off.

Asma (55) of Nalapar South of Fatehpur in Barabanki along with her daughter Mahsar Jahan (35), grandson Ayaan (10), brother Salim (54), Salim’s daughters Saika (18), Zoya (17), Reshma (16) and Alfia (15) and had gone to her niece’s wedding in Lucknow on Friday. The van was being driven by Rashid, also a kin of Asma.

Late on Saturday night, when the family was returning to Fatehpur, the van they were travelling in suddenly went out of control and overturned several times and fell in the roadside ditch near Batiya village on Baddupur-Fatehpur road in Fatehpur Kotwali area of Barabanki.

On receiving information, the police rushed to the spot, broke the glass of the car and took out the trapped injured and sent them to hospital the community health centre in Fatehpur where the doctors pronounced Asma and Ayaan dead.

Saika, Reshma and Alfia were referred to the district hospital.

Inspector Ramnaresh said the van overturned as the driver dozed off.

Meanwhile, two devotees going on pilgrimage to Vrindavan were killed when they were hit by a speeding car in Badhpura police station area of Etawah district.

According to Circle Officer Amit Kumar Singh, a bus full of devotees was going to Vrindavan from Lahar area of Bhind district of Madhya Pradesh. On the way, the bus stopped in front of a dhaba near Kamet village under Badhpura police station area of Etawah district on Saturday night. When the bus stopped, two devotees got down and went to the other side of the road. They were crossing the road when a speeding car hit them, killing them on the spot. The deceased were identified as Bhind residents Ramsia Majhi (58) and Lalta Prasad (40).

More than two dozen devotees were traveling in the bus.

In another mishap in Bhadohi, a speeding truck hit a motorcycle in Gopiganj area on Saturday evening, killing a pregnant woman and her 2-year-old son, police said.

Gopiganj Station House Officer Santosh Kumar Srivastava said Sujit Saroj was going somewhere by his motorcycle with his wife Poonam Saroj (23) and son Hrithik Saroj (2) when a speeding truck hit the two-wheeler from behind at the Mirzapur trisection. The woman and her son fell on the road and came under the wheel of the truck which sped away after the accident.

Sujit, however, fell on the other side of the road and escaped unhurt.

The locals present near the accident spot chased the truck for around a kilometre but could not intercept it.

A case has been registered against the truck driver who is yet to be identified.
