NHRC notice over death of inmate in drug rehabilitation centre

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) issued a notice to the Uttar Pradesh government after taking suo motu cognisance of a media report on the death of a 37-year-old man admitted to a drug rehabilitation centre in Sector 112, of Noida in Gautam Buddha Nagar district.

The media report said that the victim died after being assaulted by the staff of the rehabilitation centre.

The NHRC observed that the contents of the media report, if true, amounted to a violation of human rights of the victim. Accordingly, it issued notices to the Uttar Pradesh chief secretary and the director general of police calling for a detailed report, including the present status of the investigation of the case and compensation of relief, if any, provided to the next of kin of the deceased by the government authorities.

Reportedly, the victim was admitted to the rehabilitation centre on March 6, 2023. However, on March 9, the family received a phone call from the centre stating that the victim had fainted due to an epileptic fit, and later, the dead body was sent home in an ambulance.
