ICAR-Indian Institute of Natural Resins and Gums, Ranchi took initiative last year to observe National Lac-insect Day (N-LiD) on May 16 every year. Consequently, N-LiD was celebrated across the country by organizing awareness campaigns, expert lectures and field days for farmers, Students, faculty and other stakeholders.
Network Cooperating Centers of Network Project on Conservation of Lac Insect Genetic Resources (NPCLIGR)viz., Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat; Central Agricultural University, Imphal; Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana; AcharyaNGRanga Agricultural University, Guntur; Maharana Pratap University of Agriculture and Technology, Udaipur; Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology, Jammu; Kerala Forest Research Institute, Thrissur; State Forest Research Institute, Jabalpur; ICAR-Regional Complex for Eastern Region, Patna; Krishi Vigyan Kendra Sirsi, University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad actively participated in the event.
While advising the centers to observe the N-LiD, Dr. KK Sharma, Project Coordinator of the Network Project briefed about the importance of the lac insect, in the ecosystem services and livelihood security of the dependent human population. He also highlighted the need of conservation efforts to protect the lac insect biodiversity available in the country.
