Motor bridge to Indo-China border washed away in Chamoli district

Wednesday, 12 July 2023 | PNS | JOSHIMATH

The traffic to the border region with China has been stalled after the sole motor bridge in Chamoli district leading to the area was washed away near Jumma on the Malari highway. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has started working on preparing an alternate route to the Jumma Nala. More than a dozen villages have lost connection after the bridge across the Jumma Nala was washed away on Tuesday. The activity which led to the destruction of the struction started on Monday night but the authorities had stated then that the situation is under control.

The Jumma Nala was in spate at about 7 PM on Monday and a large boulder got stuck under the bridge. The channel was flooded once again at about midnight. The sole bridge in this area leading to the Indo-China border region being washed away has also raised questions at the claims being made by the authorities regarding enhancing the infrastructure in such border regions. More than one dozen villages in the Niti valley have been left without a road link. The bridge to the border region with China comes at a time when the government has been claiming to have enhanced efforts to develop infrastructure in this region.
