Minor girl killed for ‘honour’ by family

Tuesday, 12 September 2023 | PNS | Lucknow

A minor girl, a student of high school, was strangled to death allegedly by her family members in the name of saving ‘family honour’.

The sensational incident took place in Rajiv Nagar area of Premnagar in Jhansi.

The family members initially tried to make it a case of suicide and claimed that they had gone out and when they returned, the girl was lying on the ground in an unconscious state while her dupatta was hanging on the fan.

The post-mortem report however revealed strangulation as the cause of death. After this the police took the father into custody for questioning. The police suspect that the girl’s father is behind the murder.

As per reports, Vinod Ahirwar, a resident of Rajiv Nagar who does tailoring work, informed the police that they had gone out at 6 pm on Saturday evening, leaving their 15-year-old daughter Diksha alone in the house. He said when they returned home around 8 o'clock in the night, Diksha was lying unconscious on the floor and they took her to the medical college hospital where the doctors pronounced her dead.

Superintendent of Police (City) Gyanendra Singh said they were interrogating the family members.

Deeksha was the third among siblings. Her younger brother Vivek (15) is in eighth standard while elder brother Sunny works at a shop. According to Sunny, Vivek went to his tuition class at six in the evening. When they went out, Diksha was listening to songs on TV. When her father returned about two hours later, Diksha was lying unconscious on the floor.

According to Vinod, about eight months ago a youth living in the neighborhood used to harass his daughter. He used to follow his daughter every time she went to school or for tuition. On receiving the complaint, he filed a complaint at Premnagar police station but when the boy apologised they took back the complaint.
