Man swept away in strong currents of Kali Bein in Punjab’s Hoshiarpur
Hoshiarpur: A 51-year-old man was swept away by the strong currents of the Kali Bein rivulet following heavy rains. The incident took place on Saturday evening when Mohinder Pal of Alampur village, along with some villagers, went near the Kali Bein rivulet, which was in spate due to heavy rains in the area, said Dasuya Station House Officer (SHO) Balwinder Singh said. When Pal entered the water, he was swept away in the strong currents of the rivulet, he said, adding that the people accompanying Pal failed to save him. The SHO said that efforts are underway to trace the victim.
Govt making efforts to develop Kandi region: CM
Nangal: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Sunday said that the State Government is making strenuous efforts for developing areas around Nangal and Kandi region of the State as ideal tourist destinations for attracting the tourist from across the globe. Mann said that there is a huge potential for developing these areas as a tourist destination for which all out efforts will be made. He bemoaned that due to negligence of the successive state governments, these areas have been hitherto ignored in the pace of development but the AAP-led State Government is making concerted efforts to tap the potential of tourism in these areas for attracting the tourists to these places with immense natural beauty.
Punjab Gurdwara chief molests 13-yr-old girl, Arrested
Hoshiarpur: The chief of a gurdwara at a village in Hoshiarpur was arrested on Sunday for allegedly molesting a 13-year-old girl. The incident took place on July 20 when the girl went to the gurdwara in her village in the Chabbewal area, said Garhshankar Deputy Superintendent of Police Balkar Singh, adding that the gurdwara chief — 65-year-old Sakatar Singh — called the girl to his room where he allegedly molested her. The girl's parents informed the police after she narrated the incident to them, he added. The police said that Sakatar Singh has been arrested under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
Singla is Punjab and Haryana Bar Council chairman
Chandigarh: Advocate Ashok Singla is appointed as the chairman of Punjab and Haryana Bar Council on Sunday, while advocate Ranvir Singh Dhaka as its vice-chairman. The elections for the Bar Council’s office-bearers was held under the supervision of Haryana Advocate-General (AG) Baldev Raj Mahajan who was the returning officer as per rules. For the post of chairman, Singla and Karanjit Singh were in fray, while for the vice chairman’s post, Ranvir Singh Dhaka and Hargobinder Singh Gill (Bagga) were in contest. Total 27 votes were polled, with Singla and Dhaka winning with 14 votes each.

Chandigarh sees 73% surge in NMAT applications
Chandigarh: There is a significant growth in National Management Aptitude Test (NMAT), applications from Chandigarh, Punjab, and Haryana over the last few years, said Dr Sharad Mhaiskar, Pro Vice-Chancellor of Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS), Chandigarh campus, Sarangpur. He said that Chandigarh has recorded an impressive surge of 73 per cent in the number of applications and Himachal Pradesh has seen a substantial growth of 61 per cent, while in Haryana and Punjab, the number of applications grew by 26 percent.
