ANOTHER DOCTORATE TO ACHYUTA SAMANTA  (Pix)

Bhubaneswar: Eminent educationist, social worker and KIIT and KISS founder Prof Achyuta Samanta has been conferred with a honourary doctorate by the Mahapurusha Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Assam on the occasion of its 5th convocation. He received the honour from Assam Governor Gulab Chand Kataria. This is the 51st doctorate for Prof Samanta.

 

FLIGHTS FROM BBSR TO S’PORE, BANGKOK FROM JUNE 3  (Pix)

Bhubaneswar: The IndiGo airline will operate direct flights from Bhubaneswar to Singapore and Bangkok from June 3, reports said.

The airline has provided the schedule to the Biju Patnaik International Airport here for two flights a week to each destination. The State Government has agreed to bear the costs of unsold tickets with total ticket costs estimated to be around Rs 120 crore per year. The international terminal building at the airport is currently undergoing renovation. The direct flights are expected to greatly benefit Odisha’s tourism.

 

2 BIKE RIDERS DIE, 1 INJURED IN MISHAP IN KENDRAPADA

Kendrapada: Two bike riders died and another sustained critical injuries when a Hywa coming from opposite direction collided head on with the bike near Baripada on the Olavar-Singhpur road under the Rajkanika police limits on Thursday. The deceased were identified as Suvankar Mallick (19) and Ranjit Mallick (33) of Kaithafala village. The tragedy occurred due to rash driving of the bike, said police.

 

PITABASH APPOINTED AS PCC MEDICAL CELL CHIEF SPOKESPERSON  (Pix)

Brahmapur: Ganjam district president of Rastriya Mazdoor Congress and senior advocate Pitabash Panda has been appointed as chief spokesperson of the Media Cell of PCC. Senior leaders and well-wishers conveyed their full support to him. Panda is also a well-known social worker. He had served as the PCC observer for Nabarangpur. Panda conveyed his gratitude to PCC president Sarat Pattnaik and former PCC president Niranjan Pattnaik for his new appointment.

 

EX-RI, ASKA, SENTENCED TO RI IN BRIBE CASE

Brahmapur: Jogendra Kumar Behera, ex-RI, Aska, who had been charge-sheeted by the Vigilance police for demanding and accepting bribe from a person to process files in connection with a mutation case, was convicted by the Special Judge, Vigilance, here on Wednesday and sentenced to undergo rigorous imprisonment for a period of one year and pay a fine of Rs 5,000 and, in default of payment of fine, to undergo further RI for a period of one month.

 

CLERK TRAPPED IN VIGILANCE NET IN KENDRAPADA  (Pix)

Kendrapada: The Vigilance police of Kendrapada led by its DSP Bhagyalaxmi Puhan on Thursday nabbed Manas Dhala, Dealing Assistant of Block Education Office of Pattamundai, red-handed while he was accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000 from one Prafulla Kumar Parida, a teacher of a Project Primary School, for drawl of his arrear salary pending for more than a year.

 

JSW STEEL ACTS AGAINST COUNTERFEITERS  (Pix)

Cuttack: Local law enforcement authorities conducted a raid at the premises of Shree Steel, New Industrial Estate, Jagatpur, Cuttack, and found that the local retailer was selling counterfeit, substandard-quality galvanised roofing sheets under the brand name JSW Colouron+ (a registered trademark belonging to JSW Steel). The development marks another step in JSW Steel’s fight against counterfeiting of steel products under its brand and more importantly safeguarding the interests of customers.
