The impact of cyclone Biparjoy, which made landfall Thursday evening at Gujarat’s Jakhau port, was felt in parts of Delhi and surrounding areas as strong winds and rains hit the national Capital Friday afternoon.
A sprightly shower accompanied by gusts of wind provided a much-needed succour to the national capital which had been reeling under sweltering heat for days.
However mild, the rain left several areas submerged in water and traffic out of gear on many stretches in Delhi. Traffic was affected on the NH-48 IGI Airport stretch due to water-logging near the Rangpuri intersection and also on Captain Gaur Marg on the stretch between Modi Mill and Lajpat Nagar after an uprooted tree obstructed the way, said Delhi Traffic Police.
Kuldeep Srivastava, the head of the India Meteorological Department (IMD)’s regional forecasting centre, said Delhi witnessed light rainfall under the influence of the cyclone, a fresh western disturbance and moisture-laden southwesterly winds from the Arabian Sea which will reach the capital after crossing Rajasthan and south Haryana.
However mild, the rain left several areas submerged in water and traffic out of gear on many stretches in Delhi. Visuals surfaced from parts of Delhi, including Feroz Shah Road, Kartavya Path, RK Puram among other places and some parts of Noida, showing people embracing the rain and enjoying the much-needed break from the scorching heat.
A video on Twitter showed a severely waterlogged flyover in Ashram.
