Thursday, 20 April 2023 | PNS | Prayagraj

Three days after the murder of Atiq Ahmad and his brother Ashraf in police custody, five policemen of Shahganj police station of Prayagraj were suspended on Wednesday for negligence.

A senior police officer said the five personnel were suspended after a Special Investigation Team (SIT) charged them with negligence in discharging their duties.

Commissioner of Police Ramit Sharma had constituted a three-member SIT headed by Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Satish Chandra to probe the killings.

Those against whom action has been taken include Shahganj police station in-charge Ashwani Kumar Singh, two sub-inspectors and two constables.

On the other hand, the three accused shooters, Lavlesh, Sunny and Arun who killed Atiq and Ashraf, were presented in the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate Dinesh Kumar Gautam who remanded them to police custody for four days.

Atiq Ahmad and Ashraf were shot dead at point-blank range by three youths posing as journalists in the middle of a media interaction on Saturday night when police personnel were escorting them to a hospital in the Shahganj police station area in Prayagraj for a check-up.

The brothers were in handcuffs when they were killed in full view of camera crews.

In the Police Lines, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Satish Chandra, ACP Satyendra Tiwari and Inspector Om Prakash are interrogating the three shooters.

The police have reportedly prepared 100 questions for them. The police are also looking for the mobile phones of these accused. By examining the mobile, an attempt will be made to find out with whom they were in contact in the last moments.

On the other hand, on Wednesday, the Prayagraj police arrested Asad Kalia, a shooter of Atiq gang. He was carrying a reward of Rs 50,000.

Asad Kalia is said to be the financier of the Atiq gang. The police are now questioning him.

The three attackers were earlier kept in Prayagraj's Naini Jail, but as Ali, one of Atiq's sons, is also in Naini Jail, so they were shifted to Pratapgarh district jail.

Meanwhile, the Prayagraj Development Authority (PDA) can pull down the house of Guddu Muslim, the main accused in the Umesh Pal murder case. The PDA has pasted a notice at Guddu's house. The notice has asked the owners to demolish the illegal construction by April. 18. Guddu Muslim, who carries a reward of Rs 5 lakhs, is on the run.
