The Delhi Traffic Police on Friday advised people to use the metro for commuting during the two days of G20 Summit as bus movement will be restricted in the Lutyens’ Delhi.
The summit will be held at the newly-built Bharat Mandapam convention centre in Delhi’s Pragati Maidan under India’s presidency. The restriction order will come into effect from September 7 midnight and will stay on till September 10 midnight.
Those who live in the New Delhi area will be allowed to move freely, but those coming from other districts of Delhi, or tourists from other places, will have to show valid hotel bookings to enter the area.
The entire area of New Delhi District will be considered as “controlled zone-I”. However, bonafide residents, authorised vehicles and emergency vehicles will be allowed to travel on the road network of New Delhi District.
The entire area inside Ring Road (Mahatma Gandhi Marg) will be considered as “Regulated Zone”. Commuters are requested to avoid journey to places falling in Regulated and Controlled Zones.
Addressing a Press conference, Special Commissioner of Police, Traffic, SS Yadav, said a virtual help desk will be launched on the Delhi Police website that will list out available transport facilities and nearby medical facilities.
“There will be no effect on ambulance movement or essential services. However, there will be restrictions on plying of city buses in the New Delhi area. But there will be no restrictions on Delhi Metro. People are advised to use the Metro for commuting to their destination,” he said.
The Delhi Traffic Police will also keep cargo trucks out of Delhi for three days, said Yadav. They will be diverted to the Eastern and Western peripheral expressways. But vehicles with permission or carrying important cargo will be allowed to enter the national capital, he added. Interstate buses will also be allowed entry into Delhi.
All types of goods vehicles, commercial vehicles, interstate buses and local city buses such as DTC buses and DIMTS buses will not be allowed to ply on Mathura Road (beyond Ashram Chowk), Bhairon Road, Purana Quila Road and inside Pragati Maidan Tunnel from September 7, 8 to September 10.

However, there will be no restriction on vehicles deployed in emergency services and ambulances. It is important to note that Mathura Road, Bhairon Marg and Purana Qila Road will be closed for traffic. Further, except ambulances, no other vehicles - including DTC buses - will be allowed in the New Delhi area. All the malls and markets in the New Delhi area will remain shut.
General traffic, including all types of commercial vehicles and buses already present in Delhi shall be allowed on Ring Road & road network beyond Ring Road towards the borders of Delhi.
TSRs and taxis will be allowed to ply on the road network outside New Delhi district. However, taxis carrying bonafide residents and tourists having valid bookings in hotels located inside New Delhi district will be allowed to ply on the road network inside New Delhi district.
Aalap Patel, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Traffic, New Delhi, said people living in Lutyens’ Delhi or tourists with hotel bookings there will be allowed to commute through auto rickshaws and taxis.
Officials said inter-State buses will be allowed to enter Delhi but not allowed to terminate at the Inter-state Bus Terminals. “For ambulance assist service, people can call 6828400604. The service will be launched from the night of September 7,” Patel said.
