Over 27 lakh power employees across the country will leave their workplace in protest against the tabling of the Indian Electricity (Amendment) Bill, 2022 in the Lok Sabha on Monday.
The All India Power Engineers Federation reiterated its appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene in the matter and stop the tabling of the bill in Parliament so that this bill is not passed in haste.
The AIPEF said the bill should not be rushed through in Parliament and should be referred to the standing committee of Parliament for detailed scrutiny.
All India Power Engineers Federation chairman Shailendra Dubey said here on Sunday that the Central government was going to introduce the Electricity (Amendment) Bill, 2022, in the current session of Parliament on August 8, in violation of parliamentary conventions. He said deep resentment prevailed among the power engineers and employees over the move of the government to rush through the bill.
According to the bill, subsidies and cross subsidies will be abolished so that the full cost of electricity can be recovered from all categories of consumers. If the pumping set of 7.5 horse power is run for only six hours, farmers will have to pay a bill of Rs 10,000-12,000 per month. The same will be the case with common domestic consumers as well. Thus this bill is neither in the interest of the general public nor in the interest of the employees, the AIPEF pointed out.
