An MoU  has been signed with IIT(ISM) and Directorate General of Hydrocarbons (DGH) under Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas (MOPNG)  at the office of the DGH, Noida to enable both parties to work jointly on the Coal Bed Methane (CBM) related R&D activities, CBM resource assessment of Indian CBM blocks and  to carry out studies for enhancement of recovery of CBM resources. The MoU encompasses the scope of studies in unconventional hydrocarbon resources including Shale reservoirs,  according to a press release of the institute .

Prof. Rajiv Shekhar, Director IIT (ISM) Dhanbad and Dr. Anand Gupta ADG (Development) DGH Shared the signed copy of MoU virtually, whereas Prof. Rajeev Upadhyay, Department of Petroleum Engineering and Prof. Saurabh Dattagupta,  of Applied geophysics represented IIT(ISM) at DGH office, Noida.

Director, IIT(ISM) Dhanbad emphasized upon the need for collaboration between IIT(ISM) Dhanbad and DGH for development of CBM and other unconventional hydrocarbon resources of India. He also laid stress on the importance of coal reservoir characterization in CBM development and integration of the newly established Technology Innovation Hub (TIH) at IIT(ISM) Dhanbad.  

This MoU would bring fruitful results in meeting the energy demands in the country. Dr. Anand Gupta ADG (Development) has highlighted CBM bid rounds, the blocks offered in CBM bid round 2021 and CBM potential and activity expected in Jharkhand state at investor’s meet held at Ranchi .
